Overview

This child was somewhat small for his age, but has made up for his lack of growth in the last year or so. He is lean and slender, athletic and energetic. When Zafryn moves, it is with a boyish grace and an inherent aloofness that sets him apart from those around him - his bearing is noble and arrogant.

In a word, Zafryn's appearance is golden. Golden blonde hair, bright blue eyes, skin tanned from time spent in the sun. His walk is militaristic, a result of watching soldiers march, and his handsome face is just now beginning to lose the roundness of youth. Like his father, he is a vain boy. His appearance is never anything short of immaculate and perfectly sculpted. His hair is always in place and coiffed, his clothing always perfectly tailored and kept spotlessly cleaned, his body never covered in filth, his teeth always glimmering white.

Zafryn likes calling himself "The Lion" after his father gave him the nickname, and the boy exhibits most all of the characteristics of that great beast. He is brave in the face of danger and adversity, reacting quickly and often violently to that which disturbs him. He is fierce, proud of his heritage, protective of his family when others would seek to harm them. Zafryn even resembles a lion physically, with that flowing mane of golden hair surrounding a face that is extremely handsome for a child.

All of these positive qualities are counteracted by an innate laziness and lack of ability to pay attention to one thing for too long. He often prefers to laze about and do nothing rather than shoulder any responsibility on his young shoulders. Why do hard work when others can just do it for you? Not only is he lazy by nature, he plans a lazy future as well - little actual responsibility coupled with high rank and glory would be his ideal future. The only time he is really sprung into action is when he is fighting and when an adult tells him not to do something.

He is arrogant, superior, and filled with burning pride in himself and his father. He desires two things - to prove to the world that he is indeed his father's son, and to prove to the world that while he bears the name of his father, he is his own person.

Now, if only he didn't actually have to do anything to get this done, that would be just grand.

Ranks & Offices

Child Aide

A rank that only children can get and the only rank children can get in the Republic Guard. Open to both commoners and nobles alike, it's certainly not a position to write home about, more of a rank of learning and training (and chores). And sure, Zafryn has had to polish boots and clean up vomit and other loathsome things adding up to the most amount of work he has ever done in his life, but he's rather proud of himself for joining the First, in some way, at the age of 11. He even speechified about it when his position was first confirmed (illegally, see Scandals).

He also commonly takes miles when given inches, attempting to do certain duties that are way above that of a Child Aide, although this only lasts for so long until it all seems too much like hard work. Possibly a premonition of what's to come when he steps into the role of a Centurion.

Family Life

Parents

There's little to say that hasn't already been said about this man. Zafryn idolises his father, the hero. The finest swordsman in all of Aerval, destroyer of rebellion, protector of Gold Dragons everywhere. Everything that Zafir is, Zafryn wants to be. Everything Zafir likes, he likes and everything Zafir doesn't like, Zafryn detests. He's proud of his father, proud that his father likes him, and infinitely pleased with the nickname his father gave him - The Lion.

Zafryn's mother was a Griffon back before she married Zafir. In fact, she was a Griffon until not too long ago. He's always had a bit of a conflict between how he feels about most Griffons and the fact that his mother was born one. He certainly loves his mother, and is protective of her, but often decides he doesn't have to take any attitude from Galadra. Seeing as how he is a child and she an adult, this doesn't often go well for Zafryn.

Siblings

Unlucky Lucia, as Zafryn calls her, got kicked out of a Clan. This is funny - and Griffons suck anyway. Lucia is almost a second mother to him - but she's not his real mother, so this means he can still taunt and mock her all he likes.

The two grew up inseparable, fighting each other as much as they fought the world together. Cortik is an adult now, training to be Zafir's heir. Zafryn will always be there to support him, even if it means he has to work a little bit - if something happened to Cortik, Zafryn would become Lord Junik. No way will Zafryn let that happen.

Nessie is light and laughter, and Zafryn thinks she's kinda fun for a girl.

  • Dorian

His younger brother that Zafryn can safely say is floofier than he is - not that he will, no Junik is floofy, obviously. But that doesn't stop Zafryn from pushing his little brother around, the kid hangs out with girls way too much.

  • Julia

Prissy little sister with Cortik's temper. Zafryn would play with her more if she wasn't such a... boy about everything. Definitely inherited some Griffon tendencies.

  • Ladrian

Zafryn calls him "commoner boy" and reminds him that Galadra, who he's so clingy to, isn't his mother. He's family, and all - this doesn't stop Zafryn from bullying him time to time.

  • In memory of...

Trieden, Galia, Adelina and Aristan, his dead siblings. None of which Zafryn knew too well if at all.

Marriage

  • Ew.

Children

  • Ew.

Enemies

Daemio Sennet

Sennet brat that Zafryn loathes on principle. He's a Griffon, he's whiny, and he has an accent. He also thinks he's better than everyone else, and Zafryn will teach him how UNTRUE that is for as long as he lives. There is very little chance they will ever come to a truce, as far as Zafryn is concerned, and their relationship consists of constant oneupmanship.

Galinos N'Gato

A kid Zafryn might have ended up liking, had not it been for Galinos's snobbish streak and attitude. The two got off on the wrong foot and won't likely get on the right one, battling it out whether with thrown fists or barb-filled insults about each other's lineage.

Galinos really put the nail in the coffin on this one when he broke Zafryn's nose in the middle of the Forum, and Zafryn had to wear an awful and weird splint thing to make sure it wouldn't go crooked (which luckily, it didn't, Zutiv bless us all). He will never, ever forgive Galinos for even temporarily messing up his handsome features.

Luna Corinala

Zafryn thinks she's a wreck of a Clan Leader. Trust the Griffons to be lead by this woman.

Allies

Cortik Junik

His brother, maybe, but definitely he counts as an ally. Zafryn will always have Cortik's back, when he can, and Zafryn expects Cortik to do the same for him. There are jarring moments when the age difference reminds them both that Cortik, being an adult and a guard, can't always do that, but still. Zafryn would consider Cortik to be his closest ally and best friend.

Other than that... who needs allies? Really.

Suphi Tanelish

Despite being an adult Eagle woman, Zafryn enjoys her company as well as her extensive knowledge on horses. She's fun to hang around (you know, for a female) and has done enough for him in the past that he has come to trust her. Plus, dad saved her from something this one time, so therefore, she must be good.

Aparasha Daedalus

Zafryn and this Bear middle-class girl may not agree on all things, but they agree on something important: his hair is DIVINE. And needs to be treated as such, which Aparasha does. They are an alliance of beauty.

Accomplishments

Bloodthirst

Some contest called Firan Idol attracted many a person, so therefore, it attracted Zafryn too. He decided to compete, the only child to do so, when he learned that basically, all you had to do was show how awesome you were at something. Having many things to pick from, clearly, Zafryn jumped straight in and demonstrated the wonders of sword tricks on his wooden sword. The female judges awww'd, the male judges were at least glad he didn't sing, and while he didn't get a place, he won a HOUND. A large brown and red hound that will be his warrior dog forever and her name is Bloodthirst, and bit him many times until he made her like him.

The Junik Ban

Zafryn got his family banned from the Griffon district for a while! Er. Maybe that should be in scandals. These things sort of blur.

See Scandals.

Scandals

GRIFUNS SUK

There was a period of increased hostility between the Gold Dragons and the Griffons because both clans were holding a few of each other's soldiers in prison - so Cortik and Zafryn snuck into the Griffon District and wrote 'GRIFUNS SUK' on the wall. A mob formed and was going to beat them up, but Luna intervened and stopped them. Cortik got arrested for it but they let Zafryn go. This, he feels, is a credit to him - too bad for Cortik though.

Illegal Speeches

Zafryn managed to start his military career off with a slight bang. Upon becoming a Child Aide within the First Division, Zafryn decided that this required a speech - who wouldn't want to know about this achievement, after all? However, when his father wouldn't give him permission, Zafryn decided to the very mature thing and do it anyway, which is, of course, illegal. This caused a bit of a stir and a mixed reaction - his fellow clansmen applauded the speech's content, a few Griffons were offended by the slightly slanderous remarks about Lord Daemio, and Lady General Taleena was Not Happy that one of her Child Aides broke the law before he even got his uniform.

The charges that could have been potentially pressed against him and Lord Zafir were dropped due to his father's illustrious name, but punishment from Taleena, the General of the First Division, was not to be escaped. Zafryn spent one full day in the stocks and spoke to many different people during that time. Surprisingly, this introduced him to a number of people Zafryn would have wanted to be introduced to, and not every conversation was a lecture or chastisement. No publicity is truly bad publicity, huh?

The Junik Ban

After allegedly slaughtering around a dozen roosters and stringing them up at the Sennet estate, the world - or at least, the Griffon clan lead by Clan Leader Luna - seemed to come down on Zafryn like a ton of bricks. What ensued was a small war of speeches, insults flung from both sides, and all in all, Zafryn thinks it was a ridiculous reaction to a few dead birds. He supposes that's what you get for having a clearly emotional woman for a leader.

His family was judged to be banned from ever entering the Griffon district on pain of beatings and imprisonment, and a subsequent celebration would be held - wherein people would create effigies of Zafryn and burn them. One could not make this up if one tried.

Miscellany

Habits

Preening

In an effort to always stay tidy, Zafryn is constantly fixing his hair (when he has it), checking his reflection, checking his nails, straightening his clothes. It's enough to make one just push him in the mud. This habit is only dropped when he's fighting or yelling at someone, but picked up again straight after.

Likes

Fighting

Really, any excuse will do. Verbal or physical, competition or revenge, Zafryn will take it and enjoy it. As he gets older, he's learning how to push people's buttons to spark a reaction that might lead to a fray - although if it takes too long, he's happy to be the one getting pushed and can work himself up into a vicious temper.

Cleanliness

Zafryn bathes even when he doesn't have to. He likes being spotlessly clean, perfectly put together. Some call it floofy, but what Gold Dragon doesn't like to look flawless and shinier than everyone? And you can't do that if you're less than perfectly clean and smelling of expensive soaps.

Animals

While for the most part, they take up far too much time and effort, Zafryn does like his animals, from the Junik horses to his little ferret, General Zafir II. Now, if only they'd keep themselves clean, it'd be perfect.

Music

At the sound of someone singing, Zafryn will learn all the songs he can from them. He himself has a decent singing voice, although one rarely hears it - it's not very good to be singing for no reason, and in public.

Himself

Seriously.

Dislikes

Disrespect

This will make Zafryn hit the roof with anger. Being called a neo-noble is one thing, implying that this is somehow bad is entirely another. Zafryn thinks all those so called old blooded families, with all their traitors and perverts (a word he's not quite sure the meaning of, but he occasionally listens to adults talk) in the midst, need to get a clue and an education about what it means to be a Junik, and just how noble it is to be one.

Teffies

Out of the all the pagan dogma out there, this piece of it gets his hackles up. Who knows why, it just does.

Whiskey

Zafryn likes his wines, ale isn't too bad, but whiskey is horrible, apparently. Sure, if it's given to him, he's not about to wuss out, but he has an unshakable dislike for the flavour of it that likely won't go away even in adulthood.

Gruffles, Hydrans and Cockadoodletrices

Seriously, who needs them?
